A video has been posted online purporting to show the beheading of Japanese hostage Kenji Goto by ISIL militants. Mr Goto, a journalist and filmmaker went to Syria last October in an attempt to secure the release of his compatriot Haruna Yukawa. He failed in his attempt and Mr Yukawa was murdered last week.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the carnage at Charlie Hebdo, calling it the blessed Battle of Paris. A video purportedly from the Islamist group, posted online, says it ordered the killings in revenge for caricatures insulting the Prophet Mohammad in the French satirical newspaper.

The UAE Cabinet has approved a list of designated terrorist organisations and groups in implementation of Federal Law No. 7 for 2014 on combating terrorist crimes, issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the Cabinet's own resolution on the designation of terrorist organisations that provided for the publication of the lists in the media for the purposes of transparency and to raise awareness in society about these organisations.
