Voicing his shock and anger at the destruction around him, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon pledged to help Gaza rebuild after Israel’s three-week bombardment. He condemned what he called Israel’s excessive use of force, but also denounced Hamas rocket attacks over the border.
The International Atomic Energy Agency is investigating a claim from the Arab world that Israel fired depleted uranium ammunition during the campaign. Uranium-tipped shells are popular with the military because they can more easily penetrate tanks and armour.
President Obama is expected to move quickly to name a Middle East envoy, to prove he is serious about peace-making efforts in the region. He is believed to favour former Senator George Mitchell, well-known for his work in Northern Ireland, but who also has Middle East experience.
