Momentous event but tough times ahead, warn sceptics
The pullout of the Israeli troops and evacuation of settlements from Gaza Strip after 38 years of occupation yesterday was hailed as a historic event by Dr Jamal Al Majaida, political analyst in ABUDHABI
Even though he see the Israeli disengagement move as a positive step towards resolution of the more chronic and contentious issues between the two countries, there is also an element of scepticism among many, who believe that the entire exercise is more of a publicity stunt aimed at self-aggrandisement of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Dr Jamal Al Majaida, political analyst said in anterview with U. A .E English daily , Khaleej Times : The evacuation of settlements and the pullout of Israeli troops from Gaza Strip is a historic event, which is considered as a great success for the Palestinian Intifada, taking the people in the occupied territories towards independence.
If it wasn't for external pressure, Arab solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for independence and the influence of international community to settle the Israeli-Arab conflict, Israel wouldn't have relinquished even an inch of Palestinian land.
It was the solid stance of our people and their defiance of Israeli occupation which resulted in the pullout. However, the next step would be much harder as Israel has literally left behind vast areas of political landmines whereby many border issues are still pending and the air zone is completely under the control of Israel. What about the passageway between Israel and Egypt? Gaza airport and the territorial waters have been taken by Israel.
Intervention of the US administration is crucial in the coming stage to pave the way for new agreements and treaties to guarantee normal life for the Palestinians. Otherwise, the Palestinian entity will be choked by Israeli siege of vital elements. Despite all this, we can say the withdrawal is a positive and very important step towards independence.
