Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed the parliamentary election due to take place on June 17th.
"Today President Abbas will issue a decision to postpone the parliamentary vote to give more time for Palestinian factions to hold further discussions and enable parliament to approve a new voting law," a senior official said.
The delay is expected to heighten tensions between Abbas's ruling Fatah and the Islamic group Hamas.
The delay will enable Abbas to take steps to strengthen the ruling Fatah party against Hamas who were poised to do well in the first electoral run after a strong performance in local elections.
