The fallout from Wikileaks just keeps on coming. This time it is Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the spotlight. The latest documents from the whistleblowing website show US diplomats claiming Erdogan simply hates Israel. They also accuse him of stashing cash in eight Swiss bank accounts.
The Turkish leader has blasted the claims as slander, saying he’ll take legal action. ‘‘I don’t have any money in any Swiss bank, not even a penny. We’re gathering information from around the world to try to find out about these US diplomats. They will have to answer for this. We have spoken to the US and they have apologised, but this is not enough for us. The Americans need to take action against these diplomats,’‘ Erdogan declared. The leaked US cables also described Turkey’s foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu as a dangerous man.
Despite concern over a rocky relationship between Ankara and Washington, he laughed off the description saying he only represented an extreme danger to those who wanted to create tension in the region.
