Iraq close Syria border crossing
Iraqi and American forces have killed around 150 insurgents and captured 48 as the offensive in Tal Afar near the Syrian border, continued on Sunday. More than 5,000 Iraqi army and paramilitary troops backed by 3,500 US soldiers swept into this insurgent stronghold on Saturday, conducting house-to-house searches and battering down stone walls in the narrow, winding streets of the old city.
Late Saturday, Iraqi prime minister Ebrahim Al Jaafari, ordered the Rabiyah border crossing closed in an attempt to block the flow of insurgents from Syria, which is about 96 kilometres from Tal Afar.
Insurgents have been using Tal Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, as a convenient transit point for smuggling weapons and foreign fighters across the border.
