Iraqi President refuses to sign Tareq Aziz death warrant
The 70 year-old deputy to former dictator Saddam Hussein was sentenced last month by a court over his role in the persecution of Islamic parties under the regime. Speaking in Paris, Talabani said he would not sign the death warrant. |

Allawi claims victory amid ‘fraud’ protests
Former Iraqi prime minister Iyad Allawi is celebrating a surprise victory in the country’s parliamentary elections. His cross-sectarian Iraqiya bloc took 91 seats with with the State of Law coalition, led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki close behind with 89 seats. Allawi says he will extend “hands and heart” to all groups. |

Iraq's ruling Shiite Alliance nominated Jawad Al Maliki as its new candidate for prime minister yesterday in an effort to end four months of political paralysis over the formation of a government. Al Maliki is a top ally of outgoing Prime Minister Ebrahim Al Jaafari, whose nomination had sparked sharp opposition from Sunni Arab and Kurdish leaders and caused a monthslong deadlock. |
