Saudi Arabia still awaits Gulf War compensation

Saudi Arabia has not given up its right to receive its share of the United Nations compensation for the 1991 Gulf War that led to the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation, said Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the Saudi Civil Aviation Corporation. He said the damage caused by the war to the environment was more than $1 billion (around Dh3.6 billion) based on studies conducted by the corporation. Speaking to reporters yesterday, he said the kingdom was still demanding payment of the compensations and that three requests submitted by the Saudi government in this regard have been approved by the United Nations.
The kingdom, he said, is awaiting a ruling on the cleaning operations it conducted at the end of the war when more than 8 million barrels of crude oil spilled over the area could have caused an environmental calamity that would have engulfed the entire Gulf region.
