The Iranian President has reportedly survived an attack on his motorcade in Iran, as he was travelling to give a speech to supporters in the provincial city of Hamadan. Sources in Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s office have confirmed reports that were first broadcast by a television station in Lebanon.
Numerous media in the region said an attacker had thrown some kind of home-made explosive device before being detained. There are conflicting reports about the strength of that device. Some people are said to have been wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The populist, hardline Ahmadinejad has accumulated enemies in conservative and reformist circles in the Islamic Republic as well as abroad.
