President Barack Obama has made a rallying call against inequality in his third State of the Union address. With millions tuning in, this was his opportunity to reach his widest audience before the Democratic Convention in September and his bid for re-election.

"The people want the regime to fall" - that has been the rallying cry amid unprecedented scenes in Egypt as thousands defied a government ban to protest President Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year-old rule. Tyres were burned and stones hurled at police in Cairo. Plain clothes officers dragged demonstrators away, said witnesses, beating them with batons.
